We all know the feeling of being on edge—when something shifts in our body and we go from calm and relaxed to suddenly alert and on guard. It’s the moment we move from parasympathetic mode (rest and digest) to sympathetic mode (fight or flight).
This shift is often triggered by something outside our control—an unexpected noise, a stressful interaction, or even a worrying thought. It happens so automatically that we may not even notice it at first.
But did you know there’s an opposite to this response? Something that can intentionally activate our parasympathetic (rest and digest) mode instead?
They’re called glimmers—small moments of joy, awe, or peace that gently hug your nervous system and remind you that you’re safe.
A glimmer can be as simple as:
sunlight filtering through the trees
watching the sunset
smelling a favorite scent
a smile from a stranger
laughing until it hurts
feeling sunshine on your skin
receiving a hug
When you start noticing glimmers, you’re teaching your nervous system to rest in safety. It’s like giving your brain and body micro-doses of calm and connection throughout the day.
It’s powerful because our nervous system doesn’t just react to big events. It’s constantly processing tiny cues from your environment. It wants to keep you safe, protected and at ease.
Glimmers anchor you to the present, reminding you that you are okay, here and now. Over time, this practice strengthens your capacity for resilience and helps regulate your emotions.
How to start looking for glimmers:
1. Slow down. Pause for a moment and take in your surroundings.
2. Tune in to your senses. What do you see, hear, feel, or smell?
3. Let your body respond. When something feels good, let yourself really feel it.
The more you look for glimmers, the more they’ll reveal themselves to you.
So try it today. Look for just one glimmer. Then another. And another. Before you know it, your nervous system will thank you, and you’ll begin to feel lighter, calmer, and more connected to the beauty of life.
What’s your glimmer today? ✨
